Find your demographics using Facebook

Facebook Demographics Finder

If you’ve been online in the last couple years, you’ve probably heard a lot of “you need to be using Facebook ads” and if you’re smart, you would have tried it by now. Luckily if you have no had any success with it yet, or haven’t even tried it yet, then this may be quite useful to you.

One of the issues people have with setting up ad campaigns is demographics, maybe you’re not sure what age group most of your consumers are from, or the most popular location for your consumers. This is usually down to 2 reasons, you’re not analysing your data well enough, or you’re a new business that doesn’t have any data to work with.

Well, now there’s something you can do without making wild guesses. You can just take a look at your competitors demographics, well some of them. What’s great about this, is that this information is gathered from Facebook, so it’s a lot more reliable than most sources. Now you know exactly what your target audiences age range is and the most popular city for them is, though I usually wouldn’t want to target 1 city unless you have to. You can also see the most popular week which may be beneficial if you want to look into their promotions/status updates that week.

Take a look at Red Bull’s demographics:

Pretty cool? It’s not much, but it’s definitely something extra to fine tune your Facebook ad campaigns!

How do you access this?

It’s actually really easy, head over to the fan page you choose, then click on the Likes tab:

Well done, now you can see the basic demographics!

My findings from success related personal development fan pages

The most popular city is London, United Kingdom. This surprised me at the time of reading it, since I’m continually targeting a US audience, but made a lot of sense when I thought about it. They could have a bunch more US fans than UK, just London is a very large city and must have a decent population of fans there.

The most popular age group is 35 – 44 years old. I already knew this and it was what I expected to see, although it is nice to see confirmation that it’s correct.

Here’s the pages I looked at:

https://www.facebook.com/ryandeiss/likes

You can see with all of them that London is the most popular city and the most common age gap is 34-44, with some of them having slight variations.

Go check out demographics you need to be targeting, but don’t get too hooked up on this stuff, the best way to learn is by testing it and finding out, so that’s what you should do :)
